Welcome to Polaris, Montana

Polaris, located near Grasshopper Creek is a mining ghost town. The Polaris Mine was an important silver property founded in 1885. It was worked steadily and the ore was shipped by team and wagon to Dillon. In 1892 the Silver Fissure Mining Company, a New York syndicate bought the mine and planned extensive improvements. Forty miles of road was built from the mine to Armstead, a station on the Oregon Short Line. Fire destroyed the smelter in 1922 .

Polaris was named by a mining engineers for the polar star. The post office, with Mary Pierson in charge, opened in 1898 and has been maintained, even though the town's population has dwindled.
